Low voltage landscape wire should be selected by gauge, conductor material, jacket markings, direct-burial rating and safety listing, not by price or gauge number alone. The right size depends primarily on the total fixture wattage and the distance between the transformer and the lights.
This buying guide covers the five checks to run before you order, how pure copper and CCA wire compare at a glance, and how to choose between 12/2, 14/2 and 16/2.

What Is Low Voltage Landscape Wire?
Low voltage landscape wire is the cable installed between a landscape lighting transformer and the fixtures. The transformer steps household 120V power down to a lower voltage, most often 12V, and the wire carries that power to path lights, spotlights and accent lights.
Because the cable sits on the transformer’s output side, it does not have the plugs found on an extension cord. Depending on the transformer and fixtures, a landscape-lighting system may use low-voltage AC or DC power. Always follow the voltage and wiring requirements provided by the equipment manufacturer.
The name 12/2 has two parts. The first number is the American Wire Gauge, or AWG, size. Within the AWG system, a smaller gauge number indicates a thicker conductor. The second number identifies the conductor count, so 12/2 contains two 12 AWG conductors.
The same naming method applies to 14/2 and 16/2 wire. All three have two conductors, but their conductor thicknesses differ.
What Do 12/2, 14/2 and 16/2 Landscape Lighting Wire Mean?
Choose the wire size according to the run and load you actually have. The table below compares the three sizes for copper conductors. The exact distance each size can support depends on total fixture wattage, system voltage, circuit layout and one-way run length.
| Size | Conductors | Relative thickness | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12/2 | Two 12 AWG | Thickest of the three | Longer runs or higher total loads |
| 14/2 | Two 14 AWG | Middle | Moderate distances and loads |
| 16/2 | Two 16 AWG | Thinnest of the three | Shorter runs and lighter loads |
A thicker wire generally adds less electrical resistance over the same distance. That does not mean every yard needs 12/2 wire. A short run with a small number of low-wattage fixtures may work with 14/2 or 16/2, while a longer run or larger fixture load may benefit from 12/2.
Before ordering, calculate the total wattage of the fixtures on the run and measure the one-way distance from the transformer to the farthest fixture. These two values provide a better starting point than choosing by yard size alone.
How to Choose Low Voltage Outdoor Wire: Five Buying Checks
The gauge is important, but it is only one part of the decision. Use the following five checks to compare low voltage outdoor wire before purchasing. Shop Vantecable’s pure-copper wire during the Fall Backyard Wire Refresh and save up to 65% on eligible products.
Check the Landscape Wire Gauge and Conductor Count
Confirm whether the product is 12/2, 14/2 or 16/2. The “/2” identifies the number of conductors and says nothing about their thickness, so compare the AWG number as well.
Do not rely only on a product photo or the diameter of the outer jacket. The jacket can make two cables look similar even when their conductor sizes differ. Confirm the gauge and conductor count in the product specifications.
Check the Low Voltage Wire Conductor Material
Product pages may list pure copper or copper-clad aluminum, commonly abbreviated as CCA. Vantecable’s landscape wire uses 99.9% copper conductors, while its CCA wire is a separate product intended for compatible low-voltage connections.
Conductor material matters because two products labeled with the same AWG number may not perform identically if their conductor materials differ. Check the material description rather than assuming that every copper-colored conductor is solid copper.
Neither material needs to be described as the correct choice for every project. The decision should reflect the run length, fixture load, system voltage, installation environment and ratings of the specific product.
Check the Outdoor Wire Jacket and Markings
Read both the product specifications and the markings printed on the cable jacket. Look for statements covering sunlight exposure, moisture, temperature and the intended installation environment.
The UL Wire and Cable Guide provides background on the markings used to identify wire and cable applications. A general phrase such as “outdoor wire” or “waterproof” should not replace the specific ratings and installation instructions for the product.
Vantecable’s pure copper landscape wire is described as sunlight resistant, corrosion and moisture resistant, and suitable for exposure to wet soil and rain. Confirm that the specifications shown for the gauge and length you are purchasing match your installation.
Check the Direct-Burial Landscape Wire Rating
Only cable identified for direct burial should be treated as direct-burial landscape wire. A dark jacket or outdoor appearance does not confirm that a cable is intended to be placed in soil.
Vantecable’s 12/2, 14/2 and 16/2 pure copper landscape wire is approved for direct burial. This describes the cable’s intended installation environment, but it does not determine the required burial depth or whether additional protection is needed in every location.
Burial depth, conduit and protection from physical damage may depend on the installation location and local requirements. Direct-burial cable should still be installed according to its instructions and applicable local rules.
If a product description does not state that the wire is intended for direct burial, do not assume that adding conduit automatically changes its rating. Use the cable only in an installation permitted by its markings and instructions.
Check Whether the Landscape Wire Is ETL Listed
Look for the ETL Listed mark and confirm that it applies to the exact model or product variation you are buying. Vantecable’s 12/2, 14/2 and 16/2 pure copper landscape wire and its CCA low-voltage wire are ETL Listed.
The Intertek ETL Listed Mark page explains the purpose of the mark. An ETL listing indicates that the product has been evaluated to applicable safety requirements. It does not automatically mean that the wire is waterproof, sunlight resistant or approved for direct burial.
Certification, conductor material, jacket construction and installation rating are separate checks. A product page should provide enough information to identify each one.
When comparing landscape wire brands, use the specifications below instead of relying only on price or general marketing claims.
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Conductor | Material clearly identified as pure copper or CCA |
| Gauge | AWG size stated consistently throughout the listing |
| Conductor count | 12/2, 14/2 or 16/2 identified correctly |
| Direct burial | Rating stated in the specifications or installation information |
| Outdoor use | Sunlight and moisture resistance described specifically |
| Safety listing | ETL Listed mark tied to the applicable model |
| Length and size | Delivered length and gauge match the product ordered |
Vantecable’s pure copper landscape wire provides 99.9% copper conductors, sunlight and moisture resistance, direct-burial approval and an ETL Listed product claim. Check the selected gauge and spool length before adding the product to your cart.

Copper vs CCA Low Voltage Wire: Which Should You Buy?
For the full copper-vs-CCA breakdown — resistance, voltage drop, cost, and where each fits — see our guide. For buried outdoor lighting, choose pure copper wire that states direct burial. Pure copper landscape wire provides 99.9% copper conductors and comes in ETL Listed 12/2, 14/2 and 16/2 options designed for outdoor lighting and direct burial. CCA (copper-clad aluminum) low voltage wire is a lighter, more flexible and lower-cost option for compatible 12V and 24V DC connections. Products described as copper clad landscape wire should still be checked for outdoor-use and direct-burial markings, because the conductor description alone does not confirm the installation environment. See our copper vs CCA guide for a detailed comparison.
Landscape Wire vs Extension Cord vs Building Wire: Where Each One Belongs
A landscape lighting setup has two electrical sides, and each side uses its own cable.
Outlet → Extension Cord → Transformer → Landscape Wire → Fixtures

The extension cord is optional. It belongs only on the 120V side before the transformer, and only if the transformer manual allows it. Low voltage landscape wire belongs on the output side after the transformer. Do not swap them: landscape wire is sold for the transformer's low voltage output, and an extension cord is sold for the 120V side. Landscape wire is also not NM-B cable, which is made for indoor building wiring, and it should not be treated as UF-B cable just because both can go underground. Choose by product marking, equipment instructions and local requirements.
FAQ
Can You Splice Low Voltage Landscape Wire Underground?
Yes, when the connector is identified for the conductor material and for use in wet or underground locations. Follow the connector manufacturer’s preparation and installation instructions.
Wrapping an ordinary connection with electrical tape does not automatically create a moisture-resistant underground splice. A poor connection can allow moisture to enter and may increase resistance at the splice.
Can You Mix 12/2 and 14/2 Landscape Wire?
Some systems can contain more than one wire gauge, but each section must be included when evaluating the complete run. The 14/2 section adds more resistance than a comparable length of 12/2 wire.
Check the total fixture load, the length of each wire section and the requirements of the transformer and fixtures. For a new installation, using one gauge throughout a run can make planning and future troubleshooting easier.
Does Low Voltage Landscape Wire Have Polarity?
Many 12V AC landscape-lighting systems are not polarity-sensitive, while DC fixtures may require consistent positive and negative connections.
Follow the transformer and fixture instructions. If the cable has a ridge, colored conductor or printed side, use that feature to identify the same conductor throughout the installation.
Can Low Voltage Landscape Wire Be Left Above Ground?
That depends on the product marking, the installation location and local requirements. Even outdoor-rated wire can be damaged by lawn equipment, foot traffic, animals or repeated movement.
Route exposed cable where it will be protected from physical damage and follow the cable and lighting-system instructions. Direct-burial approval does not mean the wire must always be buried, but it also does not remove the need for proper routing and protection.
Conclusion: Choosing the Right Low Voltage Landscape Wire
Five checks should guide the purchase: gauge and conductor count, conductor material, jacket markings, direct-burial rating and safety listing.
Start by recording the total fixture wattage and the one-way distance from the transformer to the farthest fixture. Then compare the product’s gauge, conductor material and installation ratings. Choose 12/2, 14/2 or 16/2 according to the complete lighting layout rather than price alone.
For longer runs or higher total fixture loads, 12/2 provides the thickest conductors of the three options. For shorter and lighter runs, 14/2 or 16/2 may provide a better fit. Always confirm the final choice against the transformer, fixture and cable instructions before installation.
