The landscape lighting wire gauge calculator helps you estimate the right landscape wire size based on your actual low voltage lighting setup. Enter your fixture wattage, cable distance, system voltage, transformer output and wire details to estimate voltage drop and the voltage available at the farthest fixture.
Instead of selecting 12/2, 14/2 or 16/2 landscape wire based only on cable length, this calculator evaluates the conditions that affect lighting performance, including fixture load, cable distance, voltage and conductor material.
This tool is designed for low voltage landscape lighting projects where the correct wire size depends on the complete system setup.
Calculate Your Landscape Lighting Wire Gauge
Enter your project details below to estimate voltage drop and fixture voltage for your low voltage landscape lighting setup. The calculator uses your lighting load, cable distance, system voltage, wire gauge and conductor material to evaluate the selected wire configuration.
Voltage Drop Calculator
Enter your watts, distance, voltage and wire details to estimate voltage drop and fixture voltage.
Model: I = W ÷ system V; drop = 2 × I × (R/1000ft) × one-way ft × material (round trip). Copper 12 AWG = 1.68 Ω/1000ft @ 35°C (0.0336 Ω per 10 ft one-way path). CCA ×1.5. Estimate only; follow NEC and local codes.
Calculator Inputs
| Input | What to Enter |
|---|---|
| Total Lighting Wattage | Enter the combined wattage of all fixtures connected to the same wire run. For example, six 7W fixtures on one run should be entered as 42W. Do not enter the transformer’s maximum wattage. The calculator estimates voltage drop only, so confirm that the total fixture load does not exceed your transformer’s rated capacity. |
| One-Way Cable Distance | Enter the distance from the transformer to the farthest fixture. The calculator uses the one-way cable route and accounts for both conductors in the circuit. |
| System Voltage | Select the voltage of your landscape lighting system: 12V or 24V. The selected voltage affects the current required for the same lighting load. |
| Transformer Output Tap | Select the actual transformer output setting used for the project. For adjustable 12V systems, select the available tap such as 12V, 13V, 14V or 15V. For 24V systems, use the matching transformer option. |
| Wire Gauge | Select the wire size you want to evaluate: 12 AWG, 14 AWG or 16 AWG. |
| Conductor Material | Select the actual wire material being installed: Copper or CCA. Different conductor materials have different resistance values, which affect the estimated voltage drop. |
Accurate inputs are important because the same wire gauge can produce different results depending on fixture wattage, cable distance and system voltage.
How the Landscape Lighting Voltage Drop Calculator Works
The landscape lighting voltage drop calculator estimates how much voltage may be lost between the transformer and the farthest fixture based on the project information entered· by the user.
The calculation combines fixture wattage, cable distance, system voltage, wire gauge and conductor material. The distance entered into the calculator represents the one-way cable route from the transformer to the farthest fixture, while the calculation includes both conductors in the circuit.
The model uses a conservative end-loaded assumption, meaning the selected fixture load is evaluated as if the lighting demand is concentrated toward the end of the wire run. Real installations may produce different results when fixtures are distributed along the cable route.
Copper and CCA are calculated using different resistance values because conductor material affects voltage loss. The calculator applies the selected material when estimating the result, so users should always select the same material as the wire product they plan to install.
The copper resistance reference used in this calculation model is based on approximately 0.0336 Ω per 10 feet of one-way 12 AWG copper conductor path (20 feet of total conductor length for the complete circuit) at a 35°C operating reference condition.
Published copper conductor resistance data can be referenced through NIST Handbook 100: Copper Wire Tables.
The result is a performance estimate for planning purposes. It does not replace fixture manufacturer specifications, transformer instructions or local installation requirements. Always confirm that the final voltage available at the fixture meets the requirements of the lighting products being installed.
For additional voltage-drop calculation reference, WAC Lighting calculator provides a separate landscape lighting voltage planning tool.
Understanding Your Landscape Lighting Wire Result
The calculator result helps you understand how your selected wire configuration performs under your project conditions. The most important value is not only the estimated voltage loss, but also the estimated voltage available at the farthest fixture.
| Calculator Output | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Voltage Drop | The estimated amount of voltage lost through the wire run based on the selected load, distance and conductor material. |
| Fixture Voltage | The estimated voltage available at the farthest fixture after calculated voltage loss. Compare this value with your lighting product requirements. |
| Wire Gauge Comparison | Shows how changing wire size affects the estimated result. A larger conductor size generally reduces resistance in the cable run. |
A calculator result should be reviewed together with the lighting product requirements. A lower voltage at the farthest fixture may affect lighting performance, while a larger wire size may provide additional margin for the same project conditions.

How to Improve Your Landscape Lighting Calculator Result
If your calculator result shows limited voltage margin, adjust the project conditions and calculate again.
Choosing a larger wire gauge can reduce conductor resistance and improve the voltage available at the fixture. Moving from 16 AWG to 14 AWG or from 14 AWG to 12 AWG changes the resistance of the cable run and can improve the estimated result.
Transformer output can also affect the available voltage in the lighting circuit. If your transformer supports multiple output settings, selecting an appropriate tap may improve fixture voltage, but the selected setting must remain within the requirements of the connected lighting products.
Cable distance is another important factor. Shortening the cable route, moving the transformer closer to the lighting area or changing the layout of the lighting zones can reduce voltage loss through the circuit.
For larger lighting projects, avoid extending one long cable route without checking the calculation. If the wire gauge, transformer setting or project layout changes, update the calculator inputs and review the new result.

Why is my calculator result different from another voltage drop chart?
Different calculators and charts may use different assumptions, including conductor resistance values, operating conditions and load models. A calculator result should always be interpreted based on the specific inputs used for that project, including fixture wattage, cable distance, system voltage and wire material.
Why does changing transformer output affect my calculator result?
Transformer output changes the voltage available to the lighting circuit. Selecting a different transformer output tap can change the estimated fixture voltage, but the selected setting must remain within the requirements of the connected lighting products.
Why does copper and CCA produce different calculator results?
Copper and CCA have different conductor resistance characteristics, so the same wire gauge and cable distance can produce different voltage-drop estimates. Select the conductor material that matches the actual wire product being installed. For a detailed comparison of conductor materials, see our Copper vs CCA Low Voltage Wire guide.
