SJOOW Cable: How to Choose 14/3, 14/4, 16/3 or 16/4

Choose SJOOW cable by matching the equipment’s voltage, required conductor count, marked cable rating, run length and connectors, not by gauge alone. Vantecable’s SJOOW cable comes in 14/3, 14/4, 16/3 and 16/4, each in 50 ft and 100 ft lengths. The 14 AWG options use larger conductors than the 16 AWG options, and the second number shows how many conductors are inside. This guide explains how to narrow the choice.

Is SJOOW Cable Right for Your Equipment?

SJOOW cable may fit when the equipment and its connection allow a 300V flexible cord, but voltage alone does not establish compatibility. Read the nameplate or manual for the voltage, check whether the manufacturer specifies a cord type, and confirm the connection permits a flexible cord instead of fixed wiring. The upcoming SOOW vs. SJOOW guide explains how the 300V and 600V types differ.

The table below lists the checks to complete before choosing a size.

Check What to confirm
Voltage Nameplate or manual permits a 300V cord, with no 600V-class requirement
Cord permission Manual or label allows a flexible cord for this connection
Conductor count Wiring diagram or connector calls for three or four conductors
Connector match Plug and connector ends match the equipment’s configuration and ratings

Caution: Do not use SJOOW where the equipment or applicable rules require an approved fixed-wiring method.

Which SJOOW Cable Size Fits Your Equipment?

14/3 fits compatible three-conductor equipment that requires the larger gauge, while 14/4 provides four conductors at the same gauge. The 16/3 and 16/4 options provide the corresponding configurations in the smaller gauge.

Gauge alone does not establish the permitted load. Cable ratings can vary with construction and conductor count, so use the voltage and current information printed on the exact cable or included in its product documentation.

What Is 14/3 SJOOW Cable Used For?

14/3 SJOOW cable is a three-conductor option for compatible portable lighting, battery chargers and workshop equipment. Its 14 AWG conductors are larger than those in 16/3, making it the option to evaluate when equipment input or run length rules out the smaller gauge.

Confirm that the equipment diagram calls for three conductors and that the cable marking, connectors and planned length meet the equipment requirements. Equipment category alone does not settle the choice because two tools or chargers can have different input and starting requirements.

When Do You Need 14/4 SJOOW Cable?

Use 14/4 SJOOW cable when compatible portable equipment requires four conductors and the larger 14 AWG size. Possible applications include certain portable lighting, control and equipment connections, but the equipment wiring diagram must identify the function of all four conductors.

The fourth conductor changes the available circuit configuration. It does not increase the cable’s capacity or make 14/4 an automatic replacement for 14/3.

Which Equipment Fits 16/3 SJOOW Cable?

16/3 SJOOW cable is the smaller three-conductor option. It may fit compatible work lights, shop fans, battery chargers and other lighter portable equipment when the marked cable rating, run length and connectors meet the equipment requirements.

Read the equipment’s input rating rather than assuming that every “light-duty” device fits 16 AWG. A motor-driven device may also have starting requirements that are not fully represented by its normal running current.

What Is 16/4 SJOOW Cable Used For?

16/4 SJOOW cable fits compatible lighter portable equipment or control circuits that require four conductors. It provides one more conductor than 16/3 without changing the 16 AWG conductor size.

Follow the equipment wiring diagram to identify the function of every conductor. Do not select 16/4 merely because equipment has several operating functions or phases; the required conductor arrangement must come from the manufacturer’s diagram or connector configuration.

Does Cable Length Change the SJOOW Cable Size You Need?

Yes. A longer run increases total conductor resistance and voltage drop, which can require a larger conductor when the equipment manual or voltage-drop calculation calls for it.

Compare the 50 ft and 100 ft options using the equipment’s input current and acceptable delivered voltage. Do not assume that every 100 ft run requires 14 AWG or that every 50 ft run can use 16 AWG. The load and the equipment manufacturer’s requirements decide whether the smaller gauge remains suitable.

If a completed cord becomes unusually warm during use, disconnect it and check the equipment load, connections and cable selection. Our guide to why cords get hot explains the main warning signs.

Does Cold Weather Affect SJOOW Cable?

Yes. Cold weather can make SJOOW cable stiffer and harder to uncoil, reposition or store. Avoid sharp bends when the cable feels unusually stiff, and stop using it if the jacket develops cracks, flattened areas or other damage.

Check the temperature range printed on the exact cable or packaging because a value published for one configuration should not automatically be applied to another. The temperature rating defines the evaluated operating range, but the cable’s handling can still change as temperatures fall. For more detail, see our weather ratings guide.

What to Check Before You Buy SJOOW Cable

Before ordering, confirm each item in this checklist:

  • Equipment voltage: Verify that the equipment permits a 300V flexible cord.
  • Input current: Read the rated input from the equipment nameplate or manual.
  • Conductor count: Confirm whether the wiring diagram requires three or four conductors.
  • Cord type: Check whether the manufacturer specifies SJOOW or another flexible-cord type.
  • Cable marking: Compare the requirements with the voltage, current and temperature information printed on the exact cable.
  • Connector configuration: Match the plug, connector and pin arrangement to the equipment.
  • Cord diameter: Confirm that the connectors and strain relief accept the cable’s actual outside diameter.
  • Installation method: Check whether applicable rules permit a flexible cord in the intended location.

The finished assembly must use compatible connectors and strain relief. OSHA’s strain-relief requirement addresses pulling force at terminals, while its flexible-cord guidance covers damaged cords and wet-connector hazards.

If the nameplate or wiring diagram leaves a requirement unclear, contact Vantecable’s product support team with the voltage, input current, required conductor count, planned length and connector type. The currently published product pages do not consistently provide outside diameter, so request that measurement before buying plugs or strain-relief hardware.

SJOOW Cable FAQ

Does /4 Mean a Ground Wire Is Included in SJOOW Cable?

No. The /4 designation confirms that the cable contains four conductors, but it does not by itself assign their electrical functions.

Check the conductor colors, cable documentation and equipment wiring diagram. If one conductor is identified in green, it is intended for equipment grounding and should not be reassigned to another function.

Can 14/4 SJOOW Cable Replace 14/3?

Sometimes, but it should not be treated as an automatic replacement. Although both use 14 AWG conductors, 14/4 contains an additional conductor and may have a different outside diameter.

The connector, strain relief and termination arrangement must accommodate the selected cable. Any unused conductor must be handled according to the equipment or finished-cord instructions.

What Should You Check Before Adding Connectors to SJOOW Cable?

Confirm the connector’s voltage rating, current rating, pole configuration and permitted cable-diameter range. Its strain relief must grip the cable jacket securely without crushing it or allowing pulling force to reach the terminals.

Because the four Vantecable product pages do not consistently publish outside diameter, obtain the exact measurement from the cable marking, packaging or Vantecable support before ordering connectors.

Is Vantecable SJOOW Cable ETL Listed?

Yes. The current Vantecable product pages identify the 14 AWG, 16/3 and 16/4 SJOOW products as ETL Listed. Confirm that the received cable or packaging carries the ETL mark and matches the configuration ordered when the exact listing scope is important.

Conclusion: Choose SJOOW Cable From the Equipment Requirements

Start with the equipment’s 300V compatibility and wiring diagram. Then select three or four conductors and compare 14 AWG with 16 AWG using the cable marking, equipment input, run length and connector requirements.

Vantecable’s 14/3 and 14/4 options provide larger-gauge three- and four-conductor configurations, while 16/3 and 16/4 provide smaller-gauge alternatives for compatible equipment. Before ordering, verify the exact cable marking and make sure the planned connectors and strain relief fit its outside diameter.
